Description

Each Wednesday from 12:30-1:15 p.m., the Summer Institutes will offer a professional development session focusing on an equity, diversity and inclusion topic.

The featured speaker for these sessions is Janice Sabin, PhD, MSW, Research Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education, University of Washington. Sabin teaches workshops on healthcare disparities and the science of implicit bias. In addition to implicit bias, her research examines pediatricians’ racial bias/discrimination in treatment decisions, provider race and /weight bias; stereotypes toward people with mental illnesses; lesbian women and gay men.

Space is limited and advanced registration is required for each session.


Update on The Science of Implicit Bias and The Implicit Revolution

This talk describes the science of implicit bias and defines terms including bias, discrimination, structural racism, and "implicit revolution." It also addresses evidence of how bias impacts the academic/healthcare/scientific/research setting. Finally, it will explore unintentional bias, good intentions, and microaggressions and address methods to recognize and overcome personal bias.


Striving for Excellence: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

The session will begin with a brief overview of the science of implicit bias and the "implicit revolution" and will then address the following questions: Why does diversity matter? How to define diversity? What is inclusion? What are some of the lessons learned in this field? Dr. Sabin will present the NIH Scientific Workforce Diversity research model and DEI Toolkit. Racial disparities in NIH funding will be explored. How to write a personal diversity statement will also be discussed.

Manifestations of Implicit Bias in Academia: Individual and Organizational Remedies

This session will include a brief overview of structural racism, social determinants of health, the science of implicit bias and the "implicit revolution." We will explore scientific evidence of how implicit bias impacts the academic/healthcare/scientific/research setting focusing on race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and the value of a diverse workforce. Best practices and strategies to mitigate the impact of bias in academia will be presented.
